Dual Tone 61

1961 Dual Tone style

played by David Bowie

always start with a good temple

glued my 2″ thick maple pieces for the body

made myself a home made planner with my router…not bad

Cut out the shape and routered the sides using the temple

routered the slot for the truss rod in the neck

glued a piece of maple on the head stock

using the router I cut out the top shape for the head stock

after cutting out the back of the head stock I installed the tuner keys

after calculating and cutting the slots for the frets, using my home made radius tool I cleaned the fretboard at 10″ radius

glued the fretboard to the neck

cut out the cavity in the body for the PU and the pots

lined up the neck to mark the neck pocket

curved the shape of the neck

after calculating the inlay sizes I marked and cut out the fret board

this step is where I can do a dry assembly and see that all lines up good

stained the fretboard to get the color desired

after figuring out the 60 degree angle on the edges I then filed it by hand

got the back shape done with a hand grinder and 80 grit sand paper

painted my pick guard black

made myself a temporary paint chamber and painted the body white artic

some dry assembling

made this 2e pick guard to go on top of the black one

painted the neck and pick guard black

made the logos white and clear painted everything

after figuring out the bridge position, I drilled the holes

wired up all the components and the test came out great

here is a look at the guitar before I put the strings on
